The furniture that rebuilt Britain

G Plan canproudly trace their roots back to 1898, when Ebenezer Gomme began handcrafting beautiful furniture in his workshop. In 1953, his grandson Donald launched the G Plan brand and with it a post-war furniture revolution, as he took the then radical step of selling sofas without matching chairs. Over the years G Plan has created some of the most enduring and iconic furniture of the 20th century, something that they still aim for with every piece they design today.

Frequently Asked Questions?

What does G Plan stand for?

G Plan is a pioneering British furniture brand developed in the 1950’s by Ebenezer Gomme. The company was originally established by Ebenezer Gomme with his brother-in-law, Jim Pierce, in 1898, who began making hand-made chairs. By the time Gomme’s Leigh Street factory was built in 1909, the company was at the cutting edge of the furniture trade in High Wycombe. In 1911, the company diversified from making chairs into producing sideboards, cabinets, and more.

The G Plan brand is a whole concept and abbreviation that comes from "The Gomme Plan". This plan revolutionised furniture shopping in post-war Britain – where customers could buy stylish, well-made furniture on a piece-by-piece basis, rather than buying entire matching sets. G Plan allowed you to furnish your home at your own pace and budget.

G Plan became synonymous with good taste and modern living. Their clean lines, focus on functionality, and use of materials like teak wood perfectly captured the mid-century design aesthetic. Even today, G Plan furniture is highly sought-after by vintage enthusiasts, and the company itself continues to produce modern takes on their classic designs.

How can you identify G Plan furniture?

There are a few ways to identify whether a piece of furniture is from the iconic G Plan brand. The most definitive method is to check for a manufacturer label. Look for a hidden spot like the underside of a drawer or the back of a piece. Here's where the era of the furniture comes in handy.

1952 - 1960 - Look for a gold-stamped label that reads "E Gomme, High Wycombe" with a bold "EG" in the centre and "G PLAN" written in bold gold lettering below. For Danish designed pieces by Ib Kofod-Larsen from this period, the label will have an inscription with his signature and the words "Designed by Ib Kofod Larsen, G Plan Danish Design, Made by E Gomme Ltd, High Wycombe, Bucks."

1965 - 1975 - During this period, G Plan featured a red label, prominently displaying a large "G" with the word "plan" in smaller text at the centre. Be cautious with red labels claiming to be G Plan as these could be stuck onto non-genuine models.

1985 – 1990 - A red and gold version of the (1965-1975) label was introduced with a key differentiation being the text in metallic. A legitimate G Plan label from this period will be red with a large "G" and the word "plan" written small in the centre, with both elements in metallic gold lettering.

1990 – 1992 - The red and gold label continued to be used, but with a key difference – the text would now be metallic rather than simply printed red. In the very early 1990s, a new red and gold label with a gold border was introduced.

While labels are the most reliable indicator, there are other clues. G Plan furniture is known for its clean lines, often featuring teak or other high-quality wood. Look for signature design elements like the distinctive curling lip handles on drawers and sideboards, or the characteristic concave shaping on some G Plan sideboards.

How is G Plan furniture created?

G Plan furniture is created through a process that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. The journey begins with design, where skilled designers conceptualise pieces that balance style, functionality, and comfort. These designs are then translated into detailed plans and prototypes, ensuring that every aspect of the furniture meets the brand’s high standards.

Once the design is finalised, the production process begins. High-quality materials, such as premium woods, fabrics, and leathers, are carefully selected to ensure a luxurious finish. Skilled artisans then use a mix of handcrafting techniques and advanced machinery to shape, assemble, and finish each piece. This combination of handcraftsmanship and technology ensures precision and consistency while maintaining the unique character and quality that G Plan is known for. Throughout the production process, craftsmen inspect the joinery, upholstery, and finishes to ensure they meet G Plan’s high standards. Any imperfections are addressed, and adjustments are made to guarantee the final product is flawless.
